Porta meridionaleToday, those who visit the excavations have difficulty understanding the maritime dimension of this ancient polis of Magna Graecia. It is not easy to correctly frame the ancient port since the coastline is several hundred meters away. In fact, the sedimentation of debris brought by the rivers (the Alento, an important river of Cilento, flows nearby) has shifted the coast compared to the times of the early Greeks.

The visit to the southern district begins, of course, at its gate, well guarded by a mighty tower. Continuing on the road that leads to the Porta Rosa, we encounter a cryptoporticus with a garden (perhaps a gymnasium) once adorned with various busts of eminent personalities or deities. Further on, we come across the sacred well, where sailors likely thanked the gods for bringing them home safe and sound with votive offerings.
